Introduction:

According to Chris Kessler (2013), “Genius hour is a movement that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom.  It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time during school". (geniushour.com).

What exactly is Genius Hour?

Process:

Now that you know a little more about Genius Hour, it is time to create your own project!
Over the course of the next 8 weeks each of you will create a Genius Hour Project. Each day you will be given one hour to research a topic of your choice! When you are done, you will post about your project on our classroom blog, so that you can share what you have learned with the class!
That’s right! During this assignment you will get to pick what you want your project to be about!
At the end of the lesson you will be able to complete the following tasks:

  1. Log into the classroom blog.
  2. Post on the classroom blog.
  3. Describe your project to your classmates during group discussion and/or speech therapy.
  4. Answer questions about your project during group discussion and/or speech therapy.
  5. Ask questions about a classmate's project during group discussion and/or speech therapy.

Standards Addressed:

Comprehension and Collaboration:

Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion).
Continue a conversation through multiple exchanges.
Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not understood.
Ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood.

Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas:

Describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional detail.
Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail.
Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly

* All of the common core state standards addressed in this section were copied directly from corestandards.org.

Task:

Now let’s get started!

Each of you will be put into a team that includes you and an adult helper. You are the team captain and the helper is only there to assist and guide you! You get to pick the project and you are in charge of what you do during Genius Hour! Each day for the next 8 weeks you will be given one hour to work on your Genius Hour Project. At the end of the 8 week period you will share you project with the class.  You must post about your project on our Genius Hour Classroom Blog to earn credit for your project. To post in the blog you need to complete the following steps.

Steps:

  1. Create a gmail account so that you can log onto the classroom blog.
  2. Email Ms. Chavez from your new account (the subject should be your name).
  3. Ms. Chavez will then send you an email stating that you have been added as an “author” to the classroom blog (http://drillerproject.blogspot.com/).
  4. Accept the invitation.
  5. Post about your project
  6. Include at least one image in your post.

After you have posted about your project you will talk about your Genius Hour project during speech therapy (or during group discussion if you don’t receive speech therapy).

What if I still don’t know what to do?
This YouTube clip about Genius Hour will give you some ideas, but this project should be about something that you find fascinating!!

Conclusion:

If there is something that you have always wanted to learn more about, then that would be a great topic for your Genius Hour Project! However, it could be about anything that you find interesting, unique, fun, or that you love! This is a great opportunity to teach your classmates more about you, and for you to learn more about them! You may find that that some of you have similar interests!

Useful Information

The BHS Homepage provides tons of useful information about Bakersfield High School and The Driller Way.

Here are some links to important information about BHS:

General School Information

BHS Bell Schedule

Please remember that each Monday the students get out an hour early. Please plan to meet buses arriving home one hour earlier or arrange to pick students up an hour earlier on Mondays.

Class Overview

The Driller Way
At BHS we have a school culture that focuses on living the Driller Way! Part of the Driller Way is learning to: "Behave with Honor and Service to others"!

Classroom Curriculum

My class is a self contained special education class for students with moderate to severe disabilities. I teach a curriculum that focuses on:

1. Functional Academics
2. Life Skills
3. Community Based Instruction
4. Social Skills
5. Specially Designed PE
6. Transitional Skills

If you would like to complete classroom work with your child at home, then homework packets are available upon request.

Expectations
In my class you will be expected to treat others with respect and kindness. I only have a few classroom rules but I expect those rules to be followed:
1. Keep your hands to yourself.
2. No foul or hurtful language.
3. No bullying of any kind.
BHS is a large campus with over 3000 students so we want you to feel safe and secure. Following the classroom rules creates a safe classroom environment.

Community Based Instruction
If you are able to follow the classroom rules, then you are ready for the exciting CBIs that I have planned. Community Based Instructional outings are off campus trips that allow me to teach appropriate social skills (and life skills) in a public setting. Generally, we will take these outings twice a month to: stores, local parks, the movies, restaurants, and even street safety walks in the downtown area.

Special Considerations

If your child has food allergies, specific health concerns, diet restrictions, or doctor's orders that must be followed at school, then please let me know! My classroom is one of the only classrooms on campus that has a changing room, changing table, and bathroom. Consequently, we can adequately meet the needs of any student who wears diapers, needs assistance in the bathroom, or is learning to use the restroom independently.

Welcome to BHS!

Hello! My name is Ms. Chavez and I would like to welcome you all to Bakersfield High School. I hope that the 2016-17 school year is an exciting one filled with learning, making new friends, and finding out what the Driller Way is all about!

I have been teaching special education for students with moderate to severe disabilities since 2002. I have an AA in psychology from Bakersfield College, a BA in English from Cal State University Bakersfield, and I earned my teaching credential from National University.

This year the projected enrollment of my class is 15 students with moderate/severe disabilities. I have an incredible team of instructional assistants: Ms. Letty, Mr. Robert, Ms. Sarah, and Ms. Liz, and an LVN named Ms. Debbie assigned to my class this year!

I love teaching and look forward to coming to school each day. I also love: Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel (or any superhero/comic based) movies, going to festivals, and going to “Cons” (comic cons, collector cons, etc.).

I have one daughter named Kylie Jane who is four years old, and we love to travel! This summer we took a family cruise to Alaska!
My daughter and I at the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery in Juneau, Alaska, on 7/3/2016.
